House with photostudio

  • Amsterdam
  • Private
  • 2005
This private house is designed in an area of Amsterdam with a protected historical status. Prinseneiland is surrounded by canals and is characterized by old warehouses, shipyards and black tarred wooden barns.

From the 17th century on, this is a part of the city where craftsmen and traders were working and living. The wooden façade with robust shades is designed to make the modern house fit in this area without trying to be historical.

The kitchen is a special part of the house. It is also used as photostudio by one of the residents, a culinary photographer. Because of this, the kitchen was placed promenently in the house. The shades on the street- and waterside can regulate the incoming sunlight as well as the level of privacy. Another prominent place is given to the garage. Instead of a dark closed garage box, the garage was designed as a part of the house. It is combined with the entrance hall and it has a large glass wall between the garage and the kitchen.

The backside of the house is located on the water of the Bickersgracht canal. A large glass façade and a vide was designed to enjoy this quality. The house has a terrace on the water and another terrace for extra daylight on the first floor.

The entrance of the house is combined with the garage. The large kitchen and dining area are located on the water side. The livingroom and a working space are on the first floor. The second floor contains the bedrooms, bathroom and service space.
