Glass extension Duinweg

The clients purchased an end 19th century mansion in the dune area near the beach in The Hague. In this mansion nothing had been maintained or changed in decades. Our task was to make a design which would restore the old valuable elements and to improve the living space and the connection with the garden.

The main intervention is a full glass extension at the garden side. The extension is quite small with only 14 m² of extra space. But the impact is big. The living room receives a lot more light and a better view into the garden. The extension itself is an in-between space between house and garden and provides space for a dining room connected to the kitchen. A large terrace is connected directly to the extension and gradually steps down into the garden.

The extension is designed using laminated glass as the structural element. The large roof pane spans over 3,5m. The full glass extension has the highest level of transparency possible. The light and view in the interior is maximized while the impact on the back façade is minimal.
